Certified Angus Beef ® brand 2020-’21 Internships – Producer Communications: Closes Dec. 1, 2019

The Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand is looking for students interested in the cattle industry and communications who want to gain experience with the world’s leading branded beef program. CAB’s year-round internship program develops the writing skills, storytelling talent and beef industry knowledge of its interns.

JOB SUMMARY:
Tell the Certified Angus Beef brand story to stakeholders across the beef supply chain through news writing, photography, social media content and video scripts. Interns will be responsible for projects that help increase farmer/rancher brand awareness and inspire commitment to producing cattle that fit the world’s leading beef brand. Interns must be self-starters, highly accountable with a strong desire to write. Work may be completed from a remote location or the CAB headquarters in Wooster, Ohio. Some travel is required; school-term internships work with the intern’s class schedule. Prior to the internship, all selected interns will travel to Ohio for training at the 2020 Youth Beef Leaders Seminar, slated for January 6 to 8, 2020. Other training will be in the field or via phone and frequent email.

Past interns have had a variety of career goals that require effective writing. This position offers valuable experience whether your target is print journalism, public relations or advertising copy writing. This internship is not a good opportunity for graphic design or consumer focused-communications experience.

Length of Employment:
The internship is available year-round to last one semester or summer. The fall and spring internship offers part-time employment equivalent to 10 hours a week during the academic year. The summer internship is a full-time position equivalent to 40 hours a week. Summer interns will work from home or the corporate office in Wooster, Ohio.

Specific dates of the school-year internship will be determined to coincide with the academic year. The FALL internship may be offered as renewable, continuing through SPRING after the semester break. Depending on the applicants, a separate spring internship may be offered. SUMMER terms cover a 10- to 12-week period from as early as mid-May to mid-August. The internship is often eligible for credit, and enrollment is encouraged. Regardless of whether it is taken for credit, the intern will be accountable for performance.

Essential Functions:

  • Feature stories and photography (producers, cooperating feedlots, sometimes restaurants)
  • Technical news releases that explain science or economics of the beef cattle industry
  • Media surveys to determine contact information and story use
  • Public relations stories to build on CAB alliances with industry partners
  • Support the Producer Communications team in gathering news and information by phone or email
  • Aid in development and maintain current material on our websites and in social media
  • Help write scripts for radio and video news segments
  • Transcribe recorded interviews as needed; follow up with sources for more information and write stories
  • Contribute to the producer-facing blog

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Education/Experience:

  • Junior or senior-level student majoring in agricultural communications and journalism, animal sciences and industry (communications option) or journalism.
  • Completed introductory courses in animal science and journalism (Introduction to Animal Science, News and Feature Writing I and II, Editing I, and Agriculture Magazine courses encouraged).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of cattle production and beef science concepts, and have a record of effectively communicating those concepts to producers, especially in writing. Samples of published works strongly preferred, with examples that tell stories by quoting sources.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient with Microsoft® Word
  • Superior writing and editing skills that connect with producers in their language
  • Works independently to meet deadlines and looks for next logical project
  • Effective verbal communication skills, used primarily with interviewing
  • Detailed organizational skills and follow-up

Payment will be twice monthly, to approximate $12/hour stipend, plus approved business expenses that may arise.

APPLICATION PROCESS/PRIORITY DEADLINE:
Interested students should explore the producer site www.CABcattle.com for background, then apply online at http://corporate.certifiedangusbeef.com/recruiting by submitting a brief cover letter, résumé and three writing samples of work. Exactly which term (summer, fall-spring) will be determined in the interviewing process, but applicants are encouraged to indicate a preference.
