Undergraduate Colvin Scholarship Application

Developed in 1999 when Louis M. “Mick” Colvin retired as executive director, the Colvin Scholarship Fund recognizes his role in making dreams a reality and inspiring others to be their best. Colvin co-founded the Certified Angus Beef ® brand program in 1978, leading it to provide the world’s leading brand of fresh beef. This scholarship benefits tomorrow’s leaders who are involved in their communities and committed to the continued success and progression of the beef industry.


Undergraduate scholarships to be awarded:

One scholarship, valued at $7,500, will go to the top student selected from among those submitting complete applications based on the merit of their activities and scholastic achievement, communication skills and reference letters. In addition, a minimum of four scholarships in the amounts of $6,500, $5,000, $4,000 and $3,000 will be awarded.  While only five undergraduate scholarships have been awarded historically, additional undergraduate scholarships of various amounts may be granted from year to year.


Application Requirements:

  1. Demonstrate commitment to the beef industry through activities and curriculum relevant to the pursuit of a meat science, food science, animal science, marketing, business, communications, journalism or other degree related to the beef industry
  2. Must have completed one full year at a four-year institution and have enough credit hours to be classified as a sophomore, junior, or senior at the beginning of the 2021 spring semester or quarter, and will still be enrolled as an undergraduate during the 2021 fall semester or quarter, at a four-year institution (past, present and current interns of Certified Angus Beef LLC are eligible)
  3. Must submit:*
    1. A typed essay of no more than 1,000 words on the following topic*
      • The Certified Angus Beef ® brand is known as a trustworthy, premium Angus beef brand. What additional steps could be taken to ensure that the brand’s reputation as the very best stays relevant in today’s climate among consumers and all segments of the beef community?
    2. A typed essay of no more than 500 words on the following topic*
      • Why are you pursuing the career path you have selected?
  4. A high-resolution, color photo of you to be used for publicity purposes**
  5. Two recommendation letters from individuals, other than family members, who are knowledgeable of your integrity, dependability, motivation and leadership potential***
  6. A copy of your transcripts from all colleges and universities attended***


Additional Details:

  • All scholarship funds will be paid directly to the recipient for tuition, fees, books, room and board, or other direct, college expenses upon providing proof of enrollment for the 2021 fall semester
  • Certified Angus Beef LLC employees’ immediate family members are not eligible to apply

The Colvin Scholarship Fund Advisory Committee administers all fundraising, judging criteria and award selection. The committee will notify the applicant of the results by April 2021, and will further recognize the top applicant with an all-expenses-paid trip to the Certified Angus Beef ® Annual Conference, Sept. 22-24, 2021, in Marco Island, FL.
